Old Symondians & Winchester Freemasons
Founded in 1938 for men connected with Peter Symonds College — still meeting as Winchester Freemasons at the Winchester Masonic Centre, becoming a modern lodge with a friendly welcome.
Where we began
Peter Symonds College traces its roots to a Winchester grammar school founded in 1607, re-established in the late nineteenth century and now one of the country’s leading sixth-form colleges. Former pupils are known as Old Symondians — and it is from that fellowship that our lodge takes its name.
You do not have to be an Old Symondian to enquire, but the lodge was created to keep that school spirit alive: turning up for each other, doing things properly, and not taking ourselves too seriously.
Consecrated 1938 — welcoming now
Old Symondian Lodge No. 5734 received its warrant on 2 March 1938 and was consecrated on 28 May 1938. We are a member of the Federation of School Lodges and meet within the Masonic Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
Today we meet at the Winchester Masonic Centre, 124 Alresford Road, Winchester — on the second Monday of each month. That centre is the home of Freemasonry in Winchester (Chilcomb Down House), and Old Symondian Lodge is proud to be among the Winchester Freemasons who meet there.
We are transforming into a modern lodge: clear about our values, easy to approach, and proud of a friendly welcome for new and visiting Brethren alike. More about Winchester Freemasons.
Navy, white & red
The lodge tie carries a navy field with fine white and red stripes — echoed in this website as a respectful nod to lodge dress, not a copy of regalia.
- Navy — the field of the tie
- White & red — the narrow stripes
- Gothic lettering for lodge titles
- Plain, readable type for everyday text
